Wargames Illustrated have been giving away assorted sprues from Warlord Games in the last few issues, as a result of which I seem to have a collection of models outside of my normal interests. That's fine by me, as it gives me some different challenges in painting.
Over the weekend the missus and the little miniature were away at her sisters, so attention turned to some of those sprues. A frantic few hours were spent gluing 8th Army and Afrika Korps, but it was a bunch of Warlord Games Crimean Russians that made it to the painting table First.
These come six to a sprue, with assembly limited to choosing and glueing heads. They're all in similar marching poses with muskets on their shoulders. I'm no expert in the period, so just used the painting guide that had been published in WI, so apologies in advance to any experts out there.
On the whole, pretty nice models to paint - nicely sculpted details without being too fussy. Made a nice change and it was fun interpreting the colours with what I had available (coats were GW Zhandri Dust base, with agrax earthshade and VJ German Camo beige highlight).
Here they are pre-highlight (as of Sunday Night).
It's convinced me that I just couldn't get into the horse and musket era though. Painting six was an interesting change, but the idea of painting whole regiments of these is just terrifying! I've done my time doing whole regiments playing Warhammer, and even with my Empire army I usually got a bit of a chance to vary the colours etc. Especially the straps - I loathe painting white at the best of times, and it really shows up any errors! I ended up having to tidy up the paintjob with a repeat of the buff base where the white had got out of control.
Having no long term use for these, they'll probably end up on ebay. I won't be basing them just in case.
Those are quite stunning Alan!
